Overview

MD Helicopters is an American light-helicopter manufacturer based in Mesa, Arizona. Its lineage runs from Hughes Helicopters, whose commercial rotorcraft business was acquired by McDonnell Douglas in 1984. When McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing in 1997, the civil helicopter operation was divested, and MD Helicopters was established in 1999.

The company's products derive largely from the Hughes Model 269/500 family. These include the MD 500 series and MD 530F light single-engine helicopters, the MD 520N and twin-engine MD 902 Explorer using the NOTAR anti-torque system, and the MD 600N.

Under Patriarch Partners ownership from 2005, the firm struggled commercially. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2022 and emerged that August under new owners Bardin Hill Investment Partners and MBIA Insurance. The recapitalized company set out to increase production, with civil and military light helicopters as its focus.
