Piaggio Aerospace traces to a company founded by Rinaldo Piaggio in Genoa, Italy, in 1884, initially fitting out ships before entering aviation in 1915; it is among the world's oldest aircraft manufacturers and shares ancestry with the Piaggio scooter brand. It is headquartered at Villanova d'Albenga, near Genoa.
The company is best known for the P.180 Avanti, a distinctive twin-pusher-turboprop business aircraft introduced in 1990 and noted for its speed in its class. Earlier products include the P.166 twin-engine utility transport, and it later developed the P.1HH HammerHead unmanned reconnaissance derivative.
Under Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Investment Company from 2006, Piaggio faced a declining business-aircraft market and entered extraordinary administration under Italian government commissioners in December 2018. After a prolonged sale process, Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar completed its acquisition (announced December 2024), with the business continuing as Baykar Piaggio Aerospace.
