Williams FJ33

Few numbers matter more to an operator than what hangs on the wing or sits in the nacelle. The Williams FJ33, from Williams International, is a turbofan for jet propulsion for airliners and business jets producing 1,800 lbf of thrust, in service since 2000.

The Williams FJ33 is a compact turbofan engine developed for very light jets (VLJ) and advanced trainer aircraft, offering an excellent thrust-to-weight ratio in an extremely small package. It is used in the Eclipse 500/550 and Cirrus Vision SF50 personal jets, as well as several military trainer applications. The engine features a two-stage fan, centrifugal compressor, and annular combustor in a pod-mountable design. Its applications include the Eclipse 500, Eclipse 550 and Cirrus Vision SF50 — and an engine's installed base matters commercially, because a widely flown type means deeper parts availability, more shop options and better residual liquidity.

For a turbofan, the commercial questions centre on fuel efficiency relative to the generation it competes with, the maturity of its support network, and — for any individual unit — its position in the shop-visit cycle, since a heavy shop visit is one of the largest single costs in aviation.
