GE Aerospace GE9X

Few numbers matter more to an operator than what hangs on the wing or sits in the nacelle. The GE Aerospace GE9X, from GE Aviation, is a turbofan for jet propulsion for airliners and business jets producing 105,000 lbf of thrust, in service since 2016.

The GE Aerospace GE9X is the world's largest and most powerful turbofan engine by thrust, developed exclusively for the Boeing 777X. It features the largest composite fan in aviation at 134 inches in diameter, fourth-generation carbon fiber composite fan blades, and ceramic matrix composite (CMC) components in the combustor and turbine. The engine delivers approximately 10% better fuel efficiency than its predecessor, the GE90-115B. Its applications include the Boeing 777X, Boeing 777-8 and Boeing 777-9 — and an engine's installed base matters commercially, because a widely flown type means deeper parts availability, more shop options and better residual liquidity.

For a turbofan, the commercial questions centre on fuel efficiency relative to the generation it competes with, the maturity of its support network, and — for any individual unit — its position in the shop-visit cycle, since a heavy shop visit is one of the largest single costs in aviation.
