GE Aerospace Passport

Few numbers matter more to an operator than what hangs on the wing or sits in the nacelle. The GE Aerospace Passport, from GE Aviation, is a turbofan for jet propulsion for airliners and business jets producing 18,920 lbf of thrust, in service since 2015.

The GE Aerospace Passport (also called the Passport 20) is a high-bypass turbofan developed specifically for the Bombardier Global 7500 ultra-long-range business jet. It features a composite fan with 18 blades, advanced CMC hot section components, and FADEC, delivering class-leading specific fuel consumption for the large-cabin business jet segment. The engine entered service in 2018. Its applications include the Bombardier Global 7500 — and an engine's installed base matters commercially, because a widely flown type means deeper parts availability, more shop options and better residual liquidity.

For a turbofan, the commercial questions centre on fuel efficiency relative to the generation it competes with, the maturity of its support network, and — for any individual unit — its position in the shop-visit cycle, since a heavy shop visit is one of the largest single costs in aviation.
