Fixed-Base Operator (FBO)

A Fixed-Base Operator (FBO) is a business at an airport authorised to provide services to general and business aviation — fuel, hangarage, ramp parking, ground handling, crew and passenger lounges, and often maintenance. For private flyers the FBO is effectively the terminal: you arrive planeside, not through the airline concourse.

Why it matters: the FBO is the interface between an aircraft and an airport — fuel, parking, handling, crew and passenger facilities. The quality, and cost, of FBO service varies enormously, and at major business-aviation airports handling and ramp fees are a real line in trip cost.

Operators quickly learn that FBO choice affects both budget and experience: fuel prices at competing FBOs on the same field can differ meaningfully, fees are often waived with a fuel uplift, and busy events make advance arrangements essential. For frequent destinations, negotiated fuel and handling arrangements are standard practice.
