Glass Cockpit

A glass cockpit replaces individual mechanical gauges with integrated digital displays (e.g. Garmin G1000/G3000, Collins Pro Line, Honeywell Primus) showing flight, navigation and systems data. Beyond a modern look, it improves situational awareness and integrates navigation, traffic and terrain — and an avionics suite heavily influences an aircraft's value.

Why it matters: integrated displays changed the safety and workload profile of flying — attitude, navigation, traffic, terrain and engine data in one scan, with failure modes managed by redundant displays rather than a panel of independent instruments. Insurers, training providers and buyers all treat glass as the modern baseline.

For buyers, the panel is now a major share of a light aircraft's value: comparable airframes with modern glass versus legacy instruments trade at a substantial premium, and upgrade projects are priced in tens of thousands with real downtime. Check the avionics generation and its upgrade path — an orphaned system is a hidden liability.
