Vertical Navigation (VNAV)
VNAV (Vertical Navigation) is the flight-management capability that computes and guides the aircraft's vertical path — top-of-descent, altitude constraints and glidepaths — either as guidance to the pilot or coupled to the autopilot. Paired with LNAV (lateral navigation) it enables efficient, precise, largely automated flight profiles.
Why it matters: vertical navigation lets the flight management system fly accurate climb, cruise and descent profiles automatically — and, on approach, provides the stabilised vertical guidance that dramatically improves safety over dive-and-drive techniques. Approaches flown with vertical guidance are consistently more stable and lower-workload.
For owners, VNAV capability interacts with approach minima: aircraft equipped and approved for approaches with vertical guidance can often use lower minima at more airports, which converts directly into fewer diversions. It is one of the capabilities that quietly determines how usable an aircraft is in poor weather.
