Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM)

RVSM airspace (roughly FL290–FL410) reduces the vertical spacing between aircraft from 2,000 ft to 1,000 ft, nearly doubling capacity at the efficient high altitudes business jets prefer. Flying it requires approved altitude-keeping equipment and monitoring — a standard capability on modern business aircraft.

Why it matters: RVSM airspace halves vertical separation at the flight levels where jets are most efficient, doubling the usable levels. Operating there requires specific aircraft equipment and, in most jurisdictions, a specific authorisation — without it, an aircraft is excluded from the most fuel-efficient altitudes.

For buyers the point is simple: confirm that a candidate aircraft's equipment and paperwork support RVSM operations, and that the capability transfers cleanly. An aircraft that cannot access those levels burns more fuel and loses routing flexibility on every longer sector — a permanent operating tax.
