Overview
McDonnell Douglas was an American aerospace manufacturer and defense contractor formed on 28 April 1967 through the merger of McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and Douglas Aircraft Company. It was headquartered in Berkeley, Missouri, near St. Louis. The combination paired McDonnell's military contract base with Douglas's commercial airliner business.
On the commercial side, the company built the DC-9 and its MD-80 derivatives, the wide-body DC-10, and the later MD-11. In defense, it produced the F-15 Eagle air-superiority fighter and the F/A-18 Hornet, among the most significant military aircraft of the era.
Facing sustained competitive pressure from Boeing and Airbus in the commercial market, McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing in August 1997 in a roughly $13 billion stock transaction. Boeing was the surviving entity, ending McDonnell Douglas's thirty-year existence as an independent firm. Its commercial and defense programs were absorbed into Boeing.
